No one at Lenovo seems to understand this (except maybe JamesS in sales). Also no one at Lenovo seems to understand that this is a change, the T520 and T530 support Seems a little surprising given that IvyBridge can do 3. Best- Jeff good answer! Ultimately, if gaming is important to you and/or you don’t need to drive lots of monitors, you are better off using one of these solutions for the time being.

In the future, when X is replaced by Wayland and Mir, it’s possible that multiple GPUs can be used directly, without the need for the offloading and output-source features RandR 1.4 In other words I can enable any 3 but not all 4. This is a graphic card limitation (NVIDIA). Lenovo have downgraded the NVIDIA graphics card in the T540... I would definitely make sure that this is set toNvidia Optimus if it is not already.

Back again to give the question a bit of a bump. Some Lenovo docking stations have their own GPU (NVidia Optimus) and will not work with USB graphics devices. According to the dock info page above: ThinkPad systems with integrated graphics, or other discrete graphics: Up to two monitors can be attached and the ThinkPad display is disabled (ThinkPad display I don't see any signs of any nVidia hardware.
