At the time there were no problems with sound I also had a DAC connected via USB, so I was switching between headphones and speakers depending on the occassion. I suspect drivers are at the root of this problem, because when I hooked them up in the new apartment and launched windows for the first time, after signing in windows I carried the pc by hand to ensure it didn`t get banged up or incur any excessive shock.

It's a realtek audio chip, and you can't hear it... Perhaps windows installed some of its own drivers based on how I wired everything up...
